1st Sunday of Advent

December 1

First Sunday of Advent

The First Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of the liturgical year in the Catholic Church and opens the season of Advent—a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the coming of Christ. Theologically, this Sunday focuses on hope and the promise of Christ’s return. It reminds the faithful not only of Christ’s first coming in the humility of the manger but also of His second coming in glory at the end of time.

The Gospel readings often speak of watchfulness and readiness, calling believers to stay awake and be prepared. This dual focus—remembering Christ’s birth and anticipating His return—invites the Church to live in joyful hope, rekindling trust in God’s faithfulness and the fulfillment of His promises.

The purple liturgical color symbolizes both penance and royalty, underscoring the themes of repentance and the coming of the King. The lighting of the first candle on the Advent wreath, traditionally called the “Prophet’s Candle,” reflects the hope of the prophets and God’s unfolding plan of salvation.
